Chapter 6

“So,” Chief Sanchez said in a decisive tone, “it’s decided. We need to talk to the Wards. I’ll talk to Adam, and, Clary, you can go talk to Olivia. Women find it easier to talk to another woman. I’ll just scare her if I start asking a bunch of questions.”

“Wait,” Clary said. “I just remembered. Remember when I talked to Natalie? She says that Anthony was going to make her the news anchor and replace Margaret. That’s a good motive if I’ve ever heard one, and I feel more comfortable talking to Margaret. Olivia’s running around playing hostess. Besides, Margaret is close to the family, she knows a lot about them.”

“All right,” Chief Sanchez nodded. “I’m not your boss. Go where your gut takes you.”

“What about me, Chief?” Ben asked eagerly, snapping his notebook shut. “What should I do?”

“I need you to guard the body,” Chief Sanchez said without missing a beat. Ben looked horrified, but Sanchez just shrugged. “Someone needs to do it, kid. And I’m your boss, so you need to do as I say.” Ben nodded reluctantly and turned to Anthony with an uneasy expression.

“Poor guy,” Clary shook her head as they walked back to the ballroom. She turned back and saw Ben watching them go with a forlorn expression.

“He’s a rookie,” Sanchez explained. “He needs to work his way up to the big jobs. Everyone has to go through it at some point.”

“Except for me,” she pointed out mischievously.

“Clary, you skipped quite a few steps. The usual rules don’t apply to you.”

“That’s nice to know,” Clary admitted thoughtfully. “I see Margaret over there, I’ll let you know what I find out. Oh, and by the way, Chief, we should probably find out who’s hosting this thing. It just seems like perfect timing, you know? Something happens while everyone’s at a party?”

“I’ve thought about that,” Sanchez said, scratching his chin. “Keep an ear open and let’s see what we come up with. I don’t think it should be a priority, but it’s something to look into. Maybe I can give Ben something to do besides look after the crime scene.”

“Maybe,” Clary said sheepishly, “but I already asked Logan to look into it.”

“Ah, well,” Sanchez shrugged, “Ben’s doing important work.” With that touching sentiment, he swept off in search of the mayor. Clary shook her head, pitying Ben. Someone had to do the boring and unsettling jobs, she was just glad that it wasn’t her.

“Margaret!” she called, running over to the current news anchor before she could get swept off by another dance partner.

“Little Red!” Margaret responded gleefully. Clary had a niggling suspicion that the news anchor was a little tipsy. This was good news. Alcohol lowered defenses and people were more likely to give away crucial information while they were under the influence. “How’s the party so far? Where’s your chef? These canapés are everything! I’ll do a news segment on them if you want.”

“She’d love that,” Clary laughed. “She loves talking about her cooking. Honestly, she deserves it.
